Long Term Test – Audi Cabriolet 2.6E

I'd always liked the Audi Coupes, whilst I had the mk2 GTi it was always in the top handful of cars I'd like as a replacement, built in the time Audi's were the understated choice. Started looking for a coupe in 2006, didn't find any to spec, but found an 80k Audi 80E 2.0 saloon freshly MoT'd on eBay, and by the end of the night it was mine for a bargain £590. It might not have been a Coupe, but, it was solid, and at least let me cheaply find out whether I really liked one or not, even if it did have too many doors & too few cylinders. It was such a good, cheap runner it was 3 years before I finally got round to thinking about time I had a coupe, and by then the Cabriolet's had dropped in to budget... So the hunt was on for a 2.6 Cabriolet, 2.8s were out as they need even more expensive Super Unleaded, 2.0s were definitely out as running the 2.0 saloon was slooow compared to the GTi I'd had. Preferably wanted a manual but with around 10-30 Cabs on Auto Trader nationwide it did make picking the perfect spec difficult. So it's quite an exclusive car, it's rare enough I even see another Audi 80 saloon or Coupe, another Cabriolet on the road is quite a very rare spot indeed, I can probably count on both hands the amount of Cabriolets I've seen on the road in two years. RIP Pandora

The inevitable bang happened, I was thrown back in my seat, the radio thrown out the dashboard! I'd just been hit by a Mercedes Sprinter van at approx 25mph! Read the rest of this entry »

Bangernomics – Audi 80 2.0E

We've been discussing Bangernomics lately, a principle I've been sticking to for a while having been hit by some rather high depreciation on a fairly new car, and instead turned to running older cars, though usually spending the top end of the bangernomics budget, and getting something supposedly unattainable, the Golf GTi was bought when setting out to find a cheap runabout, the Audi Cabriolet, is rather a lot of car for a £2k budget. Roll back 5 years ago, my Golf GTi was starting to suffer from 10-20k a year being put on it, not having the time to take her off the road, and extra pressure of me also running my dad around as he'd not replaced his written off 944 (serious high end bangernomics £3.5k). I was starting the hunt for an Audi Coupe, but then got offered a 70k freshly MoT'd 95 Escort Si for £650 and decided to take it. It was horrid, and I carried on the hunt for the Audi Coupe. A few weeks later I found myself looking at eBay one Friday afternoon at a 14 yr old Audi 80 2.0E saloon, 80,000 miles from new, one owner, all the MoTs, lots of service history, freshly MoT, sitting at £300 with a few hours to go, and it's in Chesterfield a mile from work.... BONUS. Taking dad home that night even negotiated a deal that he'd buy the Escort off me for not much less than I'd paid 4 weeks earlier, so we could get him back on the road too. Pandora in Chains

A few months ago I professed we were in for a mild winter. How was I so sure? Because I'd got 75KG of rock salt between work & home, and I'd also invested in a set of snow chains for the car... These are Weissenfels Klack & Go from SnowChains.co.uk, these are a little more expensive than the basic chains you can get, costing £100 rather than £60-70 for my 17" wheels, but are fitted with a pair of tensioners to automatically keep the chains centred, whereas the cheaper chains require you to retention after a short distance.

Of course after all this preparation, I was completely wrong and we've had more snow than you can shake a stick out, and early too. Our area of Chesterfield has been covered in 2-3 feet of snow...
